Fred Lemont - Thomas Cook
The Story of ‘Thomas Cook’ Travel Agents
We all recognised the name Thomas Cook, but few of us knew the fascinating and unusual story behind the company’s beginnings. Fred gave an engaging account of how the business grew from modest origins into one of Britain’s best-known travel companies. Founded by the father and later expanded by the son, the company’s journey was not always smooth, as the two often clashed — particularly over their differing views on temperance. It was a fascinating insight into the people behind a famous household name.

Captain (Rtd) Brian Biggs
We were very pleased to welcome our very local guest speaker, retired Captain Brian Biggs.
Brian shared his remarkable journey from starting out on tugboats at just 15 years old to becoming a Captain on the River Thames. Through his stories — and many fascinating photographs — he illustrated how the Thames has transformed over the years, from the days of steam to modern diesel power. He recounted his adventures from London’s East End all the way to Oman, bringing his experiences vividly to life. The audience thoroughly enjoyed his talk, especially those who are DFLs (Down From London).

A Musical afternoon with the Band - “Sleepwalk”
We were entertained by this energetic Band of six -who kept us awake and kick started the Xmas celebrations. They played classics from the 60s, 70s & 80s — Beatles, Rolling Stones, tunes to sing along to and even some dancing was enjoyed, whilst indulging in a glass (well in some cases cup) of mulled wine with a mince pie. Also, some lucky members won a raffle prize or two. The Prize for the best Christmas outfit was won by Trixie.

Jennie Randall – “Not Forgotten: The Crooked Billet”
Eighty years ago, London faced a terrifying new chapter in warfare — the arrival of the V2 rocket. What a fitting (and sobering) topic for our November meeting. We were thoughtful, and yes, at moments, a little teary as Jennie took us back to that fateful day.
Her determination to secure a blue plaque for The Crooked Billet — the pub that once stood proudly on Southborough Lane before being obliterated in the blast — was nothing short of heroic. (Honestly, it sounds like getting that plaque was almost as much of a battle as the war itself!)
Today, the site is home to a Harvester restaurant — proving that while history changes the buildings, it doesn’t erase the stories. The devastation was immense, the courage even greater, and thanks to Jennie, those lost will indeed not be forgotten.
A talk and subject strangely enjoyed by all that attended. All there were so engrossed no one took any pictures!
